Horizontal and vertical lines are very powerful elements of an image. The communicate very different feelings. Horizontal lines evoke calm. Serenity. Think of the horizon. Vertical lines evoke strength or power. Think of tall city buildings, for example. What’s most important in each of these elements is that the line is straight. Straight across your image in the case of a horizontal line or straight up and down in the case of a vertical line. I am definitely a fan of crooked/tilting pictures. I love the energy they add to an image when photographing people. However, when I have clear horizontal or vertical lines, I do my best to adhere to this rule of composition. Also, while this can certainly be achieve in camera, it’s not easy to get it perfectly straight. But it is pretty easy to do in post-processing.
As always, we at Pollack Photography are focused on you.
